make/shift is a series of workshops that help artists, crafters, makers of all kinds to take their practice and their passion and build it into a business. Whether a side hustle or a full-time practice, I can help you map out a step-by-step strategy that lets you take care of the basics without the overwhelm (or the jargon!).

MORE:

I’m building support for artists, photographers, ceramicists, painters, and makers of all types. I’m currently offering in-person workshops for groups, individual planning, and strategy sessions, and brand and design services as well as copywriting and editing. I’m working on building online resources which will be added here in the future.

There are so many talented creative people in our local creative community. Sometimes, that talent has a hard time being seen, because many of us creative folk are not very good at marketing ourselves, following up, looking professional. Sometimes it’s because we don’t know where to start and it’s all a bit overwhelming. Sometimes we’re afraid that if our creative passion becomes our day job, it will lose its sparkle.

Awesome presentation, well structured and presented. Informative. I WANT MORE.

THE INTRODUCTORY WORKSHOP

Do you love making creative things? Do you create amazing things in ceramics, photography, fashion, illustration, sculpture?

Do you want to share your passion with the world and maybe, just maybe one day, make a living doing what you love?

Don’t know where to start? Is it all a bit overwhelming? We’ve all been there.

I’m here to introduce the basics, put your mind at ease and show you that it’s not all business pants and marketing jargon.

This is an introductory seminar/workshop in the first series of four we have planned this year. We will discuss the basics of setting up a professional creative practice. The idea is that you start where you are and go from there, doing as much or as little as you’re able, making small changes over time to build a thriving practice.

Great content, easy to follow and understand, loved the humour throughout.

Make/shift is an idea that you can shift your practice with a lot of room for growth. We are starting simply – with some seminars, workshops, and a space to connect and share knowledge. Head to the workshops page and see what’s coming up. If you’d like to see something delivered on a particular aspect of running a creative practice – please get in touch.

TOPICS COVERED

The workshop will briefly cover the following topics:
1 Brand
2 Story
3 Audience
4 Competition
5 Structure
6 Legal
7 Copyright
8 Ethics
9 Cultural awareness and appropriation
10 Systems and Processes

The format of the evening is pretty casual and informal – it is planned to take about 90 minutes in total – we will talk about the ten topics above, followed by a Q&A and discussion and finally chats and connections.

Very good simple approach of the main lines of business, very helpful

WORKSHOP SERIES

This is a 5-session series, a total of 10 hours. They can be delivered as weekly 2-hour sessions or as two half-days or as a full-day workshop.

We delve into specific subjects in more depth, brainstorm, think, and kick off those activities that seem too big to tackle, and ask some fundamental questions when it comes to running an artistic practice as a business.

Why make/shift? Well, we all make and we all shift continuously in our practice. We also make to share with others (in other words, we want to sell what we make and we want to be able to make a living from what we love making, right?) so we want to shift the maker practice up a notch (or many notches) into – maybe – a part-time business, or – maybe – a full-time empire – you decide this one.
